Nativity lessons

As usual, the kids love messing with our Nativity decorations. I have learned some valuable lessons from them. There are two 'musts' when moving around a nativity. First, all the people and animals must get a VERY close view of the baby Jesus by crowding into a tiny circle.

Second, I'm not sure why the people are crowding anyway because the baby goes missing. Sydney has decided she must sleep with the baby figure. So I often find one from different sets lying in her bed. Then she tells me baby Jesus is sleeping. Kids...at least they make you laugh.

Christmas Cards

I do love Christmas cards. I wish more people sent them. I also wish I had more time in between work, family, and projects to work on creating some cards. This year I just ran out of time. Here are some candidates I made for this year's card. I always like humor, I've never been a very sappy person. I tried to inject a little humor into this year's card (see gingerbread man). I kinda failed miserably, but I did have some laughs while trying things out.

I confess I made my card list this year in a rush. Which was hard considering I stink at keeping addresses. Then DH added a few names. So if you get a Christmas card from me and wonder, why is this person who I don't *really* know well sending me a card, well...either I like you or my DH thinks he knows you. And honestly, who could be offended by getting an extra card right?

Unexpected visitors

Not the bad kind of unwanted visitors - the good kind!

I got this idea partly from my friend Farrah's very cool shop Sweet Papery (I just adore the stamps on there) and partly from Martha. The idea is to keep a little tray of gifts by the door for unexpected visitors or carolers who come by your house during the Holidays. I made these little boxes of treats with tags from my custom SP stamp.

My kids were so sweet to help with these. Although, they did ask 'if no friends come to visit us, can we eat them?'. So come visit me and get a treat! Or my kids will be on a sugar high.

Where I've been...

During the Thanksgiving break, I thought to myself, "self, how about we paint the kids bathroom?" And I replied, "why that will only take me a few hours, what a great idea!". And so began my mini-makeover. What I intended to take two days turned into two weeks as I added a few more things here and there and I said "Self, if you ever have the bright idea to do more home improvement over the Holidays, please go jump in the lake."

I do, however, like the results. I found a fun curtain and now this room is a Florida Keys, lighthouse theme (without much theme). I had a very limited budget so I used left-over materials from other projects and a few choice supplies from my favorite home improvement store. Painting the walls (a very light grey that looks slightly blue) turned into...

Thanksgiving 2008

Thanksgiving 2008...we visited, we ate too much, we were happy to mingle with famly. We had our customary get-together at my Grandmother's house. It's always nice to see everyone and play some games...

Friday Fun Time-Waster

If you didn't catch my last Friday post you may not know the fun you can expect here each Friday. Fear not friends! I bring you fun!

For this week, I present Line Rider. In this game you 'draw' hills, curves and ramps that a little sledder then rides. You have to create enough ramp that he makes the course on his own. The tricky part is to create something creative and interesting that can continue on a while before he 'crashes'.

Try it out (hint: start with small lines) and then check out some of these very creative works!

Legacy

Late last week my paternal grandfather passed away following a traumatic brain injury from a fall about two months ago. His wife was by his side as he peacefully and slowly slipped away. My grandfather was a wonderful man who will be very missed. There is so much of him and his principles that was passed on to my family. And of course, his 'rule-bending' during games.

I made the trip to Utah for the funeral services. Being surrounded by so many extended family and friends made it possible to find some bright moments during the weekend. I was able to visit with cousins who I haven't seen since I was a child and we enjoyed a rousing round of pictionary as a nice distraction. Thank you to my DH who took on all the duties of two parents so I could attend.

The services were lovely and my father delivered a wonderful eulogy. A blog at ralphgibbons.blogspot.com was setup for memories and tributes. I thought the picture below of the family paying their respects was beautiful. How sweet is my grandmother! When asked what she was going to do by a well-meaning friend, she responded 'I'm a fighter.'

Happy Halloween 2008

I'm a little late posting our Halloween activities for this year. We started the last week by doing a little pumpkin carving.

The kids had fun and loved seeing the pumpkin guts. We displayed our witch and castle and hoped the bunnies didn't eat them!

Later in the week I visited the kids school for their annual Halloween parade. Each class makes their own costumes and the kids are so excited to see their parents.


Here is 'Dr. Sydney'. She came straight towards me instead of in line with her class. I could hear her across the other side of the yard yelling 'Mommy!' looking for me.

Tristen's class was a box of crayons. I loved this idea. How fun are all the little crayons in a row. Tristen was the line leader and waved to everyone as he led the parade.

That evening we visited the annual ward Trunk or Treat. We always have so many people attend and many fantastic costumes. There is lots of creativity!

DH's brother and SIL have been able to attend with us a few years and we always have fun together.

Afterwards we finished up with a little trick or treating around the neighborhood. The kids had a blast.

Halloween Fun

Halloween is just around the corner and we've been busy having fun and getting ready with a little family and friends time.

I started out with a little craft day with my Mom and sister. I started working on my first Christmas present (which I can't show because it would ruin the surprise!). It's always fun when they come join me. Thanks gals!

Made a little time to make the turkey my kids wanted for a pumpkin at our Super Saturday activity. (Sorry for the poor picture.) The wood pieces are meant to stand out with a pumpkin as the center body for the turkey. My kids thought this was fun.

Found a little time to help my sis make this fun skull wreath for halloween with red glitter eyes.

Then we had a birthday/halloween party to go to. I made this frame for the birthday boy. I thought it turned out pretty cute.

The kids got their first chance to try out their costumes at the party. Here they are ready and excited to go.

Sydney told me she wanted to be a 'pink pincess' from day one. If you know her, you know there is no other choice than princess. So yes, she looks almost just like last year.

Tristen was very excited to be Bumblebee the Transformer. Every day he wakes up and asks me 'Is today Halloween?'. 'Mom, you remember you are going to get my bumblebee costume? You remember the store where it's at?' If you look in his left hand, yes he is holding his little Bumblebee transformer.

The party was fun - and I guess it tired us out!


We drove straight from there to the hospital to visit DH's mom who broke her leg. She just stepped off a curb wrong and fractured her left leg. She also sprained her right ankle in the process. She had surgery to pin the broken leg and we went by to visit her. How awful! We wish her a very speedy recovery.
